What is engraving?
Engraving is a historical process that involves scratching the surface of various materials to produce a design or words.
The traditional method for creating engraved products used various shaped hand tools. This is a highly skilled process requiring a higher level of precision. However, modern techniques allow the creation of a larger range of effects.
What is a laser?
The laser dates to 1960 and in its primitive stage had no real function. Subsequently, after further refinement, it became integrated into countless different applications. The word laser is an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.” Agitating atoms forces the production of photons that when reflected and focused into an intense beam of coherent light that among other capabilities has the power to cut different material.
Why is a laser used for engraving?
By controlling a laser by computer, it is possible to produce highly advanced patterns on a variety of products. The precision permitted by this technique provides a high-quality finish very quickly. A different depth of cut is necessary for varied materials to make the best results. Since the computer controls the laser it is perfect for providing the accuracy required.
Engraved products
Laser engraving works well for various products. Consequently, the benefit of using these products compared to painted signs is that the engraved product has a much longer life span. Companies and professionals such as doctors, dentists, and accountants often have a plaque outside of their premises to display their names and professional qualifications. Memorial plaques used for coffins and often on memorial benches and garden planting. There are also many commercial applications such as safety signs and rating signs and instrument panels for many types of equipment. However, that is not to say that all engraving now uses a laser, there is still a demand for the traditional hand carving techniques for certain bespoke projects.
Engraved materials
Engraving with laser is possible on many materials. Brass, stainless steel, aluminium and bronze are all popular metals for laser engraving. The choice of materials reflects the desired effect with cost in mind, although in some circumstances it is necessary to use certain unconventional materials. Various laminate materials can be engraved using laser and this proves to be a useful product for signs and labels that are more functional providing information or warnings. Layered acrylic laminate bonded under high pressure creates a material called Traffolyte, a product designed for use with electrical equipment as they do not conduct electricity.
